The New Civil Society of the Ruwenzori sector welcomed, on Wednesday July 5, the end of the installation by the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN) of electric wires around the Virunga National Park (North Kivu).
The installation that was launched last November was completed last week.
According to the arrangement, this initiative now prevents animals, in particular elephants, from leaving the park to devastate the fields of farmers located not far from this world heritage site.
According to the local coordinator of the New Civil Society, Meleki Mulala, this achievement will improve agricultural production in the area:
He estimates that from now on, the fields which were already abandoned by the peasants following devastations will be cultivated again.
