Suburban taxi loses control and kills two pedestrians

At least two pedestrians died on Saturday after a suburban taxi lost control and veered off the road.

The incident occurred at Buwooya roundabout on the Kyetume-Katosi-Nyenga road in Ngowe sub-county, Buikwe district.

The deceased are Mike Ssentongo and an adult woman identified only as Mutesi – both residents of Kabubiro village in Najja sub-county. Florence Babirye, Zainah Namuwaya and James Wafula were passengers in the taxi who were seriously injured while the other 16 passengers escaped unhurt.

Mr Isaac Walugembe, an eyewitness, said the unfortunate car which was speeding was carrying excess passengers from Kalambya-Kiringo village in Ngogwe sub-county towards Kakunyu village in Kiyindi council to attend the burial of an accident victim.

Ms Hellen Butoto, the Ssezibwa Regional Police spokesperson, confirmed the accident, noting that the driver is still at large. Meanwhile, the two bodies have been taken to Kawolo mortuary and the injured are being treated at Kawolo hospital but the police are still looking for the reported taxi driver.
